As LA Tech Week kicked off, the spotlight shone on the groundbreaking Culver Cup AI Filmmaking Competition, sponsored by FBRC.AI and hosted by Amazon Web Services (AWS) teammates Cody Rasmus, Betty Chung, Nikao Yang, and Nikita Kuckian. The red-carpet event took place on October 14th 2024 at the historic Culver Theatre, where emerging filmmakers harnessed cutting-edge AI tools to create short films that showcase the creative potential of generative AI in filmmaking.

"AWS is excited to power some of the top startups in this space and connect them to the creators embracing the potential of this technology through The Culver Cup,” said Jon Jones, AWS’ VP and Global Head of Startups.

Throughout the competition, filmmakers utilized a suite of pre-determined 3D assets from Global Objects, as well as state-of-the-art AI tools like Luma’s Dream Machine for rapid video generation and Playbook3D, a diffusion-based engine for rendering stunning 3D scenes. These AWS-powered tools, combined with a creative treatment crafted by director David Slade (Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, Twilight: Eclipse), allowed the participants to bring their unique visions to life.

Once the red carpet was walked and the excitement settled in, the audience took their seats in the sold-out theatre to witness the premiere of eight generative AI films. Here’s a closer look at the finalists and their work, each offering a unique take on AI-powered storytelling.
